Two Arrested in Animal Cruelty Investigation

Billy Joe Douglas, 40, Douglas, GA

Misty Thompson, 46, Douglas, GA

On April 17, 2025, the Coffee County Sheriff's Office responded to a residence on Knollwood Road following a report of suspected animal neglect.

An investigation conducted by law enforcement and Animal Control revealed two dogs on the property appeared malnourished, with one showing visible signs of injury. The animals were removed from the scene for care and further evaluation.

Charges are being pursued under Georgia Law 16-12-4, Georgia’s animal cruelty statute, which prohibits knowingly causing physical pain, suffering, or death to an animal. Violations may result in misdemeanor or felony charges depending on the severity of the offense.

Misty Michelle Thompson and Billy Joe Douglas were identified as the owners of the dogs. Thompson was taken into custody at the residence. Douglas was later arrested at his place of employment. Both individuals were transported to the Coffee County Pre-Trial Detention Center.
