Report of Burglary leads to two arrest and drug charges

On February 25, 2025, deputies were dispatched to Northside Mobile Home Park on Highway 441 North in response to a burglary that had already taken place. Upon their arrival, deputies spoke with the victim, who reported that Vernon Smith had assaulted her. 

The Victim suspected that Vernon had broken into her home and stolen several items. During a verbal altercation, 63-year-old Vernon Smith, physically attacked her, prompting a witness to intervene and separate them. Just a few days prior to this incident, the victim had been released from Wheeler County Jail and informed deputies that her mobile home had been burglarized while she was incarcerated. She reported that numerous items were missing, including a jewelry box filled with jewelry, clothing, footwear, and various electronics. 

Deputies questioned Vernon Smith, who admitted that he lost control of his emotions and attacked the victim. He also acknowledged that he and Sierra Simmons, 31, also from Douglas, entered the home to retrieve a photo album belonging to his late wife. Vernon was arrested for simple battery, and the deputies then located Sierra Simmons. She denied any involvement in the burglary and refused to allow a search of her residence for the items reported missing by the victim. During the investigation; it was learned that the items being reported stolen may have been in Sierra Simmons residence. Deputies obtained a search warrant and conducted a search of the residence and uncovered a quantity of narcotics. The Drug unit was alerted and took over the investigation.

As a result of the investigation, Sierra Simmons was arrested and charged with theft by receiving and two counts of possession of a controlled substance. Vernon Smith face charges of simple battery and burglary.
